Saturday Night Live kicked off its Easter-themed episode with a satirical sketch mocking US president Donald Trump’s handling of the US economy. While James Austin Johnson portrayed Trump in the segment, the former president had actually hosted a controversial episode of SNL himself back in 2015, during his run for the White House.
In the 2015 episode, Trump’s opening monologue was unexpectedly interrupted by comedian Larry David, who shouted, “You’re a racist!”
Just as Trump was saying, “They don’t have my talent, my money, or especially my good looks. But you know what? They’re not bad. And we’re going to have a lot of fun tonight,” the outburst occurred.
“Who the hell is— I knew this was going to happen,” Trump responded.
“Trump’s a racist!” David yelled again, then added, “It’s Larry David.”
“What are you doing, Larry?” Trump asked.
“I heard if I yelled that, they’d give me $5,000,” David replied.
Larry David, who briefly wrote for SNL , appeared on the episode as Bernie Sanders — the Democratic senator who was Trump’s rivals in the 2016 presidential race.
David later explained that his outburst was part of a $5,000 reward offered by the activist group Deport Racism, which promised to pay anyone who disrupted Trump’s appearance with such a statement.
The stunt drew attention to the backlash surrounding Trump’s campaign announcement, where he had controversially referred to Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and criminals.
After the show, Deport Racism tweeted that it had indeed paid David the reward.
