'Non-tariff cheating': Donald Trump warns trade partners with 8 points list in Sunday Easter post

US President Donald Trump in an Easter Sunday message released an eight-point list of alleged "non-tariff cheating" practices, warning international trade partners that such tactics could harm relations with the United States. The list included currency manipulation , export subsidies , counterfeiting, and transshipping to evade tariffs.
The post follows Trump’s recent announcement of a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for most US trade partners—excluding China. Talks with Beijing are ongoing, he said. “Yeah, we're talking to China. I would say they have reached out a number of times,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday.

In his post, Trump listed the following as non-tariff-related offenses: currency manipulation; VATs (which he said act as tariffs and export subsidies); dumping products below cost; government-backed export subsidies; protective agricultural and technical standards; counterfeiting and IP theft; and transshipping to evade duties.

The 78-year-old has long criticised what he sees as unfair trade practices. On Sunday, he reiterated a claim first made in 2018 about Japan’s so-called “bowling ball test” for imported cars. “It’s the bowling ball test. They take a bowling ball from 20 feet up in the air and drop it on the hood of the car,” Trump said, suggesting the test disqualifies US vehicles. “If the hood dents, the car doesn’t qualify. It’s horrible.”

At the time, the White House said the remark was made in jest, but Trump repeated the accusation again in his latest message.
