An active shooter was reported on the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee on Thursday, according to the university’s alert system. Police had already responded or were en route shortly after noon, with students and staff ordered to stay indoors and await further updates.
The university issued a warning advising everyone to “lock and stay away from all doors and windows” and to be ready to take further safety measures if necessary. The incident occurred near the Student Union, and the public was urged to remain sheltered in place.
The alert, posted at 12.40pm on April 17 instructed anyone needing emergency help to call 911 or the campus police directly. All classes and university events, including athletics, were cancelled for the day. The university also asked those not already on the main campus to avoid travelling there while the situation remained active.
