Minor volcanic activity has been reported twice this month at Barren Island , India’s only active volcano, officials said on Monday.
The eruptions occurred on September 13 and September 20 but were described as mild in nature, with no immediate threat to nearby areas, PTI reported.
Located in the Andaman Sea, about 138 km northeast of Port Blair, Barren Island is South Asia's only active volcano.
The remote island, spans roughly 3 sq km, is largely covered by volcanic cones and ash, with sparse vegetation visible from a distance. Rising 354 metres above sea level, it remains a striking geological feature of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.
Barren Island has a recorded history of eruptions dating back to 1787. Since then, it has witnessed several episodes of activity, including significant eruptions in 2017 and 2022, the latest being in July this year.
Officials continue to monitor the island closely, though the recent events have been classified as minor and pose no immediate risk to human settlements.
