A strange event occurred Friday night during a game between the St Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies at Busch Stadium. Fans were charged after a pinpoint defensive play from shortstop Masyn Winn during the first inning. But little later, he was removed from the game. Initially, nothing much was indicated. It happened only the day after when the Cardinals provided a lucid report regarding what had gone wrong.
Cardinals' Masyn Winn departs Friday game and is placed on 10-day IL
In the first inning of the Cardinals' 2–0 victory over the Phillies, shortstop Masyn Winn made a fine defensive play on Friday night. Shortly thereafter, though, he started to experience tightness in his back. His back spasmed and did not allow him to continue on the field. He departed early from the game, and by morning on Saturday, the pain had not subsided.
Saturday, April 12, 2025, a few hours before the Cardinals' next game, Masyn Winn informed the medical team at Busch Stadium that he was still hurting and had not noticed much improvement. After careful deliberation, the team put him on the 10-day injured list . This is the first time in his Major League Baseball career that Masyn Winn has been placed on the injured list.

Masyn Winn wasn't taking time out at first. He is well-known as being tough and a very competitive player. As quoted in reports by MLB, he had also wished to play despite the pain. But once he discussed it with the team coaches and doctors, he realized it would be best if he took his time to recover properly.
The staff feels that taking a short break at this point may avoid an even more severe problem later in the season. They did not want the back spasms to escalate to a prolonged problem that may plague him for several months.
Oliver Marmol discusses the team's decisionCardinals manager Oliver Marmol gave further insight into the decision after he met with Masyn Winn. He said the shortstop finally came to appreciate the danger of playing hurt.
Marmol reported , "He's a competitor, but at the same time, once we sat down and went through it, he was like, 'Man, I get it. If this were a different part of the year, I'd really push. But I understand that it's better to get this behind us and get it feeling good instead of letting this linger a couple of months."
This exchange occurred prior to the Cardinals' 4–1 defeat at the hands of the Phillies on Saturday. It was in this game that the Cardinals grounded into five double plays, the highest number they've had in a single game since April 27, 2011.
Masyn Winn's place on the roster will be taken while he recovers. The team is optimistic that he will come back strong after a few days of rest and treatment. Currently, the Cardinals are concerned about his complete recovery and wish him to return at 100 percent health.
