Poila Boishakh makes me the happiest as it comes during Basanta (spring), and the entire atmosphere is different and pious,” says Tinaa Dattaa. Talking about her plans of celebrating the Bengali New Year today, the Uttaran actress says, “This year, I am in Mumbai and will be celebrating the day with my friends. My day starts with a puja, after which I dress up in a traditional Bengali outfit and visit a temple. I go to a Bengali restaurant for lunch every year, either with my family or friends.”

‘Poila Boishakh was a food festival at home during childhood’

Recalling her childhood memories of Noboborsho (Bengali New Year) celebrations, Tinaa, who now celebrates the festival in Mumbai due to her work schedule, says, “In my childhood, we used to celebrate Poila Boishakh in Kolkata every year. It is like Diwali where everyone exchanges gifts. My parents would give me new clothes and footwear, and it (wearing new clothes) used to excite me.”

She adds, “Since Bengalis are foodies, Poila Boishakh at our home was like a food festival, where we had authentic Bengali food like mutton, pulao and fish curry, chingri macher malai curry, chutney and so many other delicacies. I would look forward to the amazing desserts prepared by my grandmother. Even today, I love having mishti pulao on Poila Boishakh.”

‘I miss celebrating the festival with my family’

Talking about how the celebrations have changed over the years, Tinaa shares, “I have grown up in a joint family, living with my grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. We used to celebrate Poila Boishakh with a different warmth. Today, times have changed and so have the celebrations. Families have become nuclear; some have shifted to different cities or countries. Abhi jahan bhi ho wahan Bengali friends se milo, have Bengali food and that’s what the celebrations are about. I miss celebrating the day with my family.”

She adds, "I love dressing up on this day. I wear a traditional Bengali sari or salwar suit, with red bindi. I also love wearing gajras and jhumkas to complete my look. Also, whenever I am shooting on Poila Boishakh, I wear a new outfit and my mom packs me a lavish Bengali spread. I have fond memories of celebrating the day with my team on the sets."

Talking about her wish for the New Year, Tinaa says, "This year, I wish to remain busy with work. I want to explore different and more challenging roles and just keep entertaining my audience."
