Nagpur: Members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) staged a protest near Variety Square in Nagpur on Saturday against the recent riots in West Bengal's Murshidabad district. Raising slogans, the activists demanded dismissal of Mamata Banerjee-led government by the Centre. VHP members also demanded that the Centre deploy paramilitary forces in Bengal to ensure peace and security of Hindus. Activists blamed the Bengal govt for the riots, as they said Hindus living in West Bengal have been victims of the violence.
Amol Thakre, secretary of VHP's Nagpur unit, said similar protests were held all over the country on the same day. The riots have affected mostly Hindus, and the Centre is expected to come forward for their protection, he said. Members of VHP and Bajrang Dal are concerned about safety of Hindus, he said. "If needed, we can come forward to protect Hindus in West Bengal. However, we are confident that Centre will soon intervene to ensure protection", said Thakre.
VHP deputy president Hemant Jambhekar said the violence was part of a larger conspiracy to scare away Hindus from West Bengal for political gains. He also sought action against perpetrators of the violence.
