Lidl has issued a product recall for a popular item over fears they pose a health risk. Available Healthy Fit's Vegan Protein Bar has been taken off shelves as it may contain an undeclared allergen which can cause rashes, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. The snack has been found to contain canola rapeseed protein isolate which can trigger a reaction in individuals allergic to mustard.
The item has now been recalled in stores across Northern Ireland, as consumers are urged to not consume the item. Multiple batches of the protein bar have been impacted, as the unlabelled items can cause serious complications for people with a mustard allergy. The batches affected are those with the best before dates of February 28 2026, March 31 2026, April 30 2026 and July 31 2026.
The retailer is urging customers who have purchased the item to return it to their nearest Lidl store for a full refund, regardless of whether they have a receipt.
A statement issued by the supermarket giant reads: "Healthy Fit is recalling the above Vegan Protein Bar due to the presence of canola rapeseed protein isolate. This ingredient can cause an allergic reaction to consumers who are allergic to mustard and products thereof.
"If you have purchased the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to mustard, we advise you do not consume it.
"Instead, please return the product to a Lidl store for a full refund, with or without a receipt."
Lidl has issued an apology to customers who may have been inconvenienced by the labelling mistake.
An allergy to mustard is rare, yet it is the most common of spice allergies. It can impact both children and adults and ranges in severity.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, symptoms of a mustard allergy can include:
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhoea
- Dizziness
- Hives or skin rash
- Nausea and vomiting
- Swollen lips, tongue or face
- Throat inflammation and difficulty swallowing
- Wheezing or shortness of breath
Someone with a severe mustard allergy is at risk for anaphylaxis, the clinic says, which can be life-threatening and requires swift medical attention.
