New Spain rule bids to end chaos on famous island loved by UK tourists - '20,000 limit'

A popular UK tourist destination has introduced a strict new vehicle cap with just 20,000 cars set to be allowed every day. The new ban will only apply to vehicles, with just 20,000 non-resident vehicles and caravans allowed on the popular island of , every 24 hours. The new with the cap in place from June 1 until September 30, 2025.

The new rule has been formally introduced by the Consell Insular d'Eivissa (Ibiza Island Council). The move is said to match up with the goals outlined in the ' Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB) in a bid to battle against It is hoped the new cap on vehicles will help to ease traffic congestion and support environmental sustainability in the Balearic Islands.

Data has shown the number of vehicles registered on the island has soared in recent years.

In 2002, there were just 51,000 vehicles registered on the island but 20 years later this figure had ballooned to a staggering 207,000.

Under the new rules, 6,000 of the 20,000 daily vehicle quota is reserved for rental cars operated on the island.

It means only 4,000 permits will be permitted for private vehicles

These cars will have to undergo prior online authorisation to be allowed to drive in Ibiza.

As part of the checks, any caravans arriving on the island must show off a confirmed reservation at an authorized campsite.

It means tourists will not be allowed onto the island if they are planning to wild camp or park up by the side of the road.

However, officials have stressed that motorcycles are currently exempt from the seasonal restrictions.

Vicent Marí, President of the Ibiza Island Council, backed the new rules, suggesting they were being implemented to boost the "quality of life" for those who lived in Ibiza.

"We're introducing this limit to guarantee the sustainability of Ibiza. The island cannot withstand uncontrolled tourism flows. This measure is about protecting the quality of life for residents and the environment.

"We are not closing the door to tourists. We are simply inviting them to enjoy our island in a way that is respectful, measured, and future-focused."
