Bhubaneswar: The iconic Kalinga Studio in Bhubaneswar is likely to become operational in January next year as the massive renovation work is nearing completion. The Odia film industry is set to get a significant boost once the studio becomes functional.
Sources said a committee of Odisha Assembly, comprising seven MLAs, visited the studio on Thursday and took stock of the development work.
Stating that the state government is taking necessary steps to make Kalinga Studio functional at the earliest, chairman of the Assembly committee Dusmanta Kumar Swain said a target has been set to complete the ongoing transformation work by January next year.
It may be noted that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had visited the Kalinga Studio on June 1 this year and reviewed the transformation work. Majhi appreciated the facilities and the newly-built infrastructure at the studio.
Majhi had earlier asked the officials concerned to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the development of the studio into a modern and world-class facility.
Several new facilities including the entrance plaza, indoor shooting facility, Kalinga movie magic, avenue land, village area, iconic landmark, snow world, community hall, bamboo structure, waterbody and green area have been developed at the studio.
Set up in 1980, Kalinga Studio had played a key role in the growth of Odia film industry. The indoor and outdoor sequences of several popular movies had been shot at Kalinga Studio in 1980s and 1990s.
However, the super cyclone of 1999 had caused extensive damage to the studio. Shortage of modern equipment also affected the facility badly
