How was the cancer detected
Emma was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2013. She was 23 years old then. Doctors told her that she had softball and golf ball sized tumors in her colon. This cancer may be stage 3, but it may have already spread to stage 4.
Many treatments but no effect
Emma underwent several treatments like chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy for stage 4 colon cancer, but it made no difference. Emma herself says, 'I continued to undergo immunotherapy for four years, but I understood that I had no other option left.'
New treatment and cancer survival
When Emma thought everything was over, she learned about a clinical trial at the University of Minnesota. This treatment was considered a new type of immunotherapy, which could give new hope against cancer. Emma took part in this trial and received treatment in late 2022 and early 2023.
New technology to defeat cancer
'CRISPR gene editing' was used in this treatment. This technique targets the inside of cancer cells. Doctors said that usually immunotherapy targets the outside of cells, but this technique weakened the cancer cells by targeting the inside of the cells.
Not even a trace of cancer remains
Two months after the clinical trial, Emma got good news. She was told that there was no trace of cancer in her body now. Emma says, 'It was absolutely unbelievable. I have lived my whole life with cancer, but now I am completely cured.' Now, two years later, Emma is completely healthy and is living her life in a new way. She said, 'I am feeling very good now. This treatment has completely changed the way I think about cancer.
