A case of malfunctioning smart meters has come to light in Hardoi. An investigation by the Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam found that one consumer's meter was reading 377 units more. Complaints of smart meters reading too fast and recording incorrect loads had been reported previously, but officials ignored them. The department is now taking action, but it's feared that many other consumers are also experiencing this problem.
The smart meter scam, which has been a source of trouble for electricity consumers, has been exposed. Consumers have complained, but officials have consistently denied it. However, now an investigation by the Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam has revealed the truth. While only one case has been detected, countless other electricity consumers are likely to face similar problems.
In the work of installing smart meters that started from December 2024, smart meters have been installed at the homes of more than 16 thousand consumers. Actually, smart meters have been causing trouble from the very beginning, some were running fast, some had some other problem; complaints were also made about this. Dilip Kumar Shukla of Buxpurwa had told that his meter was running twice as fast but no one listened, but when other people complained and even deposited money for the proper installation of check meters, a case came to light.
While 85 units were recorded in the check meter of Ankush Gupta's house, 462 units were recorded in the smart prepaid meter, which means that the consumer's meter was showing 377 units more. Whereas 3 kilowatt 350 watt load was recorded in the consumer's smart prepaid meter, only 860 watt was recorded in the check meter, which means that the reading is running fast and the load is also running fast. Now Ankush's complaint has been confirmed, after which the department is taking action at its level, experts say that there are not just one but many such consumers who would be troubled.
