An iconic BBC series based on a book has been labelled by fans as "greatest TV of all time" years after it first aired. Sherlock Holmes is arguably one of the most iconic UK programmes that has aired and ended in viewers calling it a "top classic".
Sherlock is a British mystery crime drama which is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective books. The series was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and stars well-known actors Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr John Watson.
The series graced our screens between 2010-2017 and was made up of four three-part series and a one-off special which was set in Victorian times. However, most episodes are set in modern-day London.

The story follows Sherlock Holmes as he solves crimes alongside Watson who is a former army doctor. Scotland Yard and the British public follows their cases due to Watson's blogs.
Other important characters include Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss).
Fans still continue to rave about the programme, despite it ceasing filming years ago. One took to social media to say: "I usually never write reviews for anything, but after watching this spectacular and brilliant series about Sherlock Holmes I am compelled to write about how amazing and spellbinding the series was.

"So if you ever come across this series then without any second thoughts just go for it." Another commented: "Sherlock is my favourite BBC series and the greatest TV of all time for me. Everyone needs to see it."
"Sherlock is easily one of the best series ever made. Moffat and Gatiss are genius writers who will have you falling in love with the characters the moment you meet them," a third added.
One more wrote: "This is undoubtedly the best TV show I have ever had the good fortune of watching and most probably the most amazing TV show ever made."
A fifth said: "This series is something that will forever be binge-watch-worthy. It is a true testament to top-class acting. It has got wit, humor, mystery, action, adventure, drama, emotions - a complete package."
Sherlock was mostly filmed in Cardiff and North Gower Street in London was the iconic 221B Baker Street. The first three series won BAFTAs, Emmys and a PeaBody Award for the writing and acting.
Main actors Benedict and Martin both won Emmys for their performances. All four series of Sherlock are available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
