Phase 2 of Mumbai’s underground Metro Line 3 — connecting Dharavi to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli — is nearing completion and is in the final stages of securing the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) certification, a mandatory requirement before opening to the public.
Following which the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) carried out adjusted hours of operations on stretch between BKC and Aarey. As per MMRC,“As part of the final trial integration between the Aarey–BKC corridor and the new stretch up to Acharya Atre Chowk (covering 6 stations), Mumbai Metro Line 3 will operate with adjusted hours on April 18, from 8:30 AM to 10:30 PM.
Phase 1 of Metro Line 3 — from Aarey to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) — is already operational, covering 12.44 km with 10 stations. This stretch offers 96 daily trips between 6:30 AM and 10:30 PM, with fares ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 50 for a one-way journey. The metro has significantly cut down travel time between Aarey and BKC to just 30 minutes, compared to over an hour by road via the Western Express Highway, especially during peak traffic.
The upcoming Phase 2 extension to Worli will further enhance connectivity and offer commuters a more affordable and efficient public transport option.
Once the entire 33.5-km-long underground Metro Line 3 is fully operational, it will link six key commercial business districts, 30 major office hubs, 12 educational institutions, 11 hospitals, 10 transportation nodes, and 25 religious and recreational centers. It will also provide direct access to both the domestic and international airports. Metro Line 3 is expected to be one of the city's busiest transit lines, projected to handle 1.4 million daily passengers in its first year of full operations.
