48 Minutes After Sunset: You've likely heard the saying, "Don't eat anything at sunset," but have you ever wondered why? Our sages have considered certain times to be highly special, not only for religious but also for scientific reasons. One of these times is the 48 minutes of the evening, which Premananda Maharaj has explained beautifully. A devotee asked Maharaj Ji, "Maharaj Ji, you say you shouldn't eat in the evening, but why is that?" Maharaj Ji's answer to this question is not only related to spirituality but also to the balance of our body and mind.
Maharaj Ji says that evening time is not just for worship but also for self-purification. During this time, one gets the opportunity to calm the body, mind, and soul. If one utilizes this time properly, peace and positivity automatically increase in life. Let's find out the secret behind these 48 minutes of the evening and how to live them properly.
What is the significance of the evening?
Premanand Maharaj explains that as the sun begins to set, an energy shift occurs on Earth. The intense energy of the day gradually calms down, and the stable energy of the night enters. The body's digestive system also slows down during this time. Therefore, if we eat at this time, the food may not be digested properly, and laziness or restlessness may increase.
That's why our elders have always said, "After sunset, one should not eat, but should engage in devotion."
Why are those 48 minutes of the evening special?
According to Maharaj Ji, the 48 minutes before and 24 minutes after sunset, a total of 48 minutes, are considered evening time. This period is very sacred. During this time, eating, sexual intercourse, or any physical activity should be avoided. This time is best for worshipping God, chanting the Gayatri Mantra, the Guru's mantra, or remembering the name of the Sun. Meditating or chanting during these 48 minutes daily increases peace of mind, self-confidence, and spiritual energy.
Dos and Don'ts During This Time
1. Avoid eating during this time – either finish your meal before sunset or eat it 48 minutes after.
2. If you are already busy with something, that's okay – just take 2-3 minutes to chant the name of the Lord.
3. Stay away from things like phones, TV, or arguments.
4. Keep your mind calm and offer water to the Sun God and express gratitude in your heart.
Maharaj Ji says, "During this time, feed the soul, not the body." Meaning, meditation and chanting are the true sources of energy during this time.
How to Use This Time Wisely
If you wish, you can engage in small spiritual activities during this time, such as:
1. Lighting a lamp
2. Meditating for a while
3. Chanting the Gayatri Mantra
4. Expressing gratitude in your mind
5. Reflecting calmly on the day's events
Doing this not only stabilizes the mind but also increases self-confidence and positivity.
