Milk is considered a nectar in Ayurveda because it provides strength, energy, and nutrition to the body. It is rich in calcium, protein, and vitamins, which strengthen bones and muscles. But did you know that some food combinations with milk can be harmful instead of beneficial? According to Ayurveda, certain foods should never be consumed with milk, as they can cause gas, acidity, digestive problems, and even skin allergies. Let's explore the foods that should never be consumed with milk and the reasons behind them.
First, let's talk about salty foods. Many people drink milk with bread and butter or salty biscuits, but this combination is considered harmful for the digestive system. Milk and salt have different natures. While milk is cold and heavy, salt is hot and pungent. Consuming these two together can cause stomach irritation, gas, and discomfort. Doing this for a long time can also increase the risk of skin rashes or pigmentation.
The combination of fish and milk is highly discouraged in Ayurveda. Their properties are opposite. Fish is hot and milk is cold. Eating them together creates toxins in the body, which can cause skin allergies, itching, or white spots. This is why it is advised not to drink milk for at least 6–8 hours after eating fish.
Citrus fruits or foods, such as oranges, lemons, mangoes, or yogurt, should also be avoided with milk. The proteins in milk and the acids in citrus foods react chemically, causing the milk to curdle. This can increase stomach acidity, cramps, and indigestion. Many people drink milkshakes with fruits, but not all fruits are suitable for this. Fruits like bananas or sapota are fine with milk, but citrus fruits or drinks like strawberry and orange shakes should be avoided.
Additionally, radish and milk are also considered a bad combination. Radish produces gas, and when consumed with milk, it can cause heaviness, bad odor, or digestive problems. Similarly, onion, garlic, and meat should also be avoided with milk, as they accumulate toxins in the body and can cause acne or boils on the skin. According to Ayurveda, it's best to always consume milk lukewarm and alone.
Drinking milk before bed promotes deep sleep and relaxes the body. Adding turmeric or cardamom can improve digestion and boost immunity. So, the next time you drink milk or plan to eat something with it, keep these foods in mind. The right combination can be a treasure trove of health, but if consumed incorrectly, the same milk can cause stomach upset and skin problems.
