Kolkata: After tourism, the West Bengal government’s cabinet gave its approval to accord industry status to the logistics sector in the state, in a bid to boost investments and ensure employment generation in Bengal, people in the know said.
The cabinet meeting, headed by Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee, was held today at state secretariat Nabanna.
Earlier, tourism was given the status of industry. Extending similar recognition to logistics would help the state position itself as a competitive destination for industrial and commercial activity. This comes at a time, when Bengal is trying to woo industries and investments in the state, people in the know said.
Transfer of 200 acres of land to the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Limited (WBIDC) was also approved in the cabinet meeting today, for the development of the Tajpur-Dankuni-Raghunathpur economic corridor, sources said.
"The proposed corridor project will open up massive employment opportunities across districts and boost to industrial growth in the state," sources said.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday directed the state ministers to keep vigil on their areas to maintain peace and ensure that law and order in the state is maintained during Durga Puja festivities and, people in the know said.
Banerjee has directed the ministers to remain alert during the upcoming Durga Puja festival, starting from the coming week. She directed them to keep an eye on the law and order situation during the festive period, sources informed.
During the cabinet meeting at Nabanna, state secretariat today, the CM has also urged her ministers to help the poor people with puja gifts.
