The Delhi High Court on Thursday stayed the release of the film Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder until the Union Government reviews a revision application filed against the movie's certification.
The stay order comes after the petitioner, Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, approached the Court seeking reconsideration of the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) approval of the film.
The petitioner had argued that the content of the film could disturb communal harmony and urged for the certificate to be withdrawn.
“The petitioner has been relegated to pursue the revisional remedy. Until the plea for interim relief is decided, the release must remain on hold,” the Court stated in its order.
Udaipur Files, which is based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Rajasthan's Udaipur allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous, was scheduled to release in theatres on July 11. The film has drawn public attention due to the sensitive nature of the incident it depicts.
The assailants had later released a video claiming the murder was in reaction to the tailor allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma after her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed.
The case was probed by the National Investigation Agency and the accused were booked under stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act ( UAPA), besides provisions under the Indian Penal Code.
The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
The High Court’s direction means the release will now depend on the Centre’s decision on the revision application filed under the Cinematograph Act. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is expected to examine the matter.
No new release date has been announced.
