The (Indian Premier League) stage is halfway through, and there have been some great matches this season. Though fans have enjoyed the batting and bowling performances of the teams, one of the most important departments, which is often overlooked, is fielding — which plays a huge role in saving runs for the teams, even in the crucial stages of the game.

While there have been some incredible fielding efforts witnessed so far, there have also been some average mishaps and underwhelming attempts. It is time to discuss which team, out of all ten franchises, has had a horrible time on the field — and how this has affected their performances in one of the toughest franchise tournaments in the world of cricket. There are some surprising picks, as some of the teams on this list include squads with exceptional fielders as well.

Here are the top three worst fielding teams in IPL 2025 so far: 3 . Chennai Super Kings - 68.5% (Catch efficiency) Chennai Super Kings Huddle. (Photo Source - Twitter/X)

Popular IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are enduring one of their worst seasons this year, having currently lost five straight games and languishing at the bottom of the table. Despite underwhelming batting and bowling performances, it is their fielding that has not lived up to expectations — even with exceptional fielders like , Rachin Ravindra, and Devon Conway in the squad.

CSK have a catch efficiency of 68.5% so far, which is quite underwhelming given the standard of fielders in their team. This is definitely one of the areas the MS Dhoni-led side must improve if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive and win games consistently.

2. Rajasthan Royals - 63.89% (Catch efficiency) image Rajasthan Royals. (Source -IPL/BCCI)

Franchise Rajasthan Royals (RR) have some young and inexperienced players, and it was evident in the last game that their fielding has been below par. The match saw the Royals drop four crucial catches and put in generally poor efforts in the field. The likes of Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shimron Hetmyer are known for taking acrobatic catches, which made their lacklustre performance surprising to fans and experts alike.

The boys in purple have a catch efficiency of only 63.89%, which has also affected their season so far. Their position on the points table isn’t promising either — having won only two games and lost four out of their six matches. They are currently placed eighth on the table.

1. Punjab Kings - 59% (Catch efficiency) image Punjab Kings Celebration (Source: Pankaj Nangia/Getty Images)

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) might be scoring big runs with the bat, but they have struggled with both the ball and in the field. This is the biggest reason why the -led side is not in the top four, despite having one of the most balanced squads in the tournament. They also feature some brilliant fielders in the form of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, who are among the safest in both franchise and international cricket.

The team is currently known for conceding as many runs in the field as they are scoring with the bat, resulting in a terrible catch efficiency rate of 59% — the lowest in the tournament so far. This is one area Iyer and co. will need to work on as they move forward in the tournament.
