A cybercrime gang that duped people of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of work from home has been busted. Police have arrested 12 people in this case. This gang mainly belongs to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. According to the police, a housewife had complained in January at the Adugodi police station. It was stated in the complaint that she was duped of Rs 5 lakh on the pretext of a work-from-home job.
The accused said that her credit score is low and to improve it, first, money will have to be deposited, only then will she be able to get the payment for the work. Believing this, the woman transferred the money in several installments. During the investigation, the police sent a notice to the account holder of the bank account in which the money was deposited. This led to a clue of 27-year-old Sonu, a resident of Navi Mumbai, who was later arrested.
During interrogation, Sonu revealed that he used to open several bank accounts in the name of contract laborers and used to send their passbooks, ATM cards and SIM cards to his gang mates in Uttar Pradesh. For one account, he used to get a commission of Rs 1,500. For accounts in some national banks, he used to get Rs 18,000 to Rs 20,000.
Along with Sonu, 25-year-old Harshvardhan Ojha, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was also arrested as the main accused. Later, 10 other members of the gang were also arrested, who mostly hail from UP and Bihar.
