AI Update: AI is discriminating against patients, advice to the poor - do not get MRI and CT Scan done..

Ever since AI came, dependence on AI has increased in most sectors, but can artificial intelligence be trusted completely blindly? This is a big question, recently researchers have warned how AI is discriminating between patients. Researchers found in a study that artificial intelligence models recommend different treatments for the same medical condition depending on the patient's social and economic status.

Shocked, right, but this is true. The disease is the same but AI is prescribing different treatments to different patients. Researchers reported in Nature Medicine that despite having the same health problem, the AI model sometimes changes the decision based on the individual characteristics of the patients, affecting the priority of care, diagnostic testing, treatment approach, and mental health assessment.

Not advising the poor to get tested.

For example, AI recommends advanced diagnostic tests like CT scans or MRIs only to high-income patients, while low-income patients are advised not to get tested.

AI has the power to revolutionize

The researchers found that these problems have been seen in both proprietary and open-source AI models. Study co-leader Dr. Girish Nadkarni of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York said, that AI has the power to revolutionize healthcare, but only if it is developed and used responsibly.

Co-author Dr. Eyal Klang of the Icahn School said, we have to identify where these AI models can discriminate, we have to work to refine the design of AI models, strengthen oversight, and create systems that ensure that patients remain safe.
