Akola: More than 25 dogs were allegedly poisoned to death in Goodhadi locality of Akola city late Thursday. The accused, who remains unidentified, was disturbed by the barking of dogs and scattered food laced with poison, say police.

Locals said the poisoned food was consumed by strays and pet dogs too. Soon, the dogs began vomiting, suffered seizures, and lost consciousness. Some women residents tried to intervene when they saw a man scattering food, but were allegedly threatened and silenced. Despite efforts by animal lovers to save some of the canines, 25 dogs succumbed to poison. Several others remain critical and are undergoing treatment.

The incident has left the neighbourhood shocked and angry. Residents claim the act was premeditated and driven by personal frustration rather than public safety concern.

Local resident Sandeep Gawande and others filed a formal complaint with Civil Lines police station. CCTV footage from nearby buildings capturing the accused in the act was handed over to the police.

Police inspector Jaywant Satav said, "We have received a complaint and have registered a case under sections related to animal cruelty and unlawful killing. More charges will be added based on the post-mortem reports. A thorough investigation is underway, and the culprits will be identified and arrested soon."

Animal welfare organizations have also condemned the incident. Kajal Raut, head of local NGO ‘Aadhaar for Animals', told TOI, "This is not an isolated incident. The same individuals, reportedly involved in pig-catching activities at night, resorted to poisoning dogs earlier as well. Their repeated actions and lack of police intervention emboldened them. Earlier, we rescued a dog that was brutally beaten."

She added, "We demand strict legal action and prompt arrests. Such heinous acts should not be allowed to continue unchecked."
